My name is Humberto Saabedra. I recently retired AnimeNews.biz after nearly 9 years because it had served its purpose in delivering news on developments in the Japanese animation industry. In November of 2011, I was hired to contribute to Crunchyroll’s News page and ceased covering daily news on AnimeNews.biz.
I had previously attempted to relaunch AnimeNews.biz twice as a conventional review blog free from news coverage over the years, but hanging on to that brand and domain proved to be the wrong way to go about things, as it proved too narrow in scope and confusing to most readers expecting news coverage and only finding occasional reviews.
As a result, over the past few months, I made the decision to start over from scratch with a brand new site and domain that would reflect my desire to write about more than just anime and manga, since I have varied interests outside of those mediums, as well as getting away from the idea that I needed to track metrics in order to gauge success.
VisualDeviance will be a reflection of my interests, thoughts and opinions on many subjects, as well as a place to house future experiments in photography, creative writing, music production and podcasting. I plan to write daily as well as feature an editorial calendar that reflects what I’m reading, watching, listening to and even playing.
My goal with VisualDeviance is to make a living writing, as it’s the one thing I’m good at. I hope you’ll be interested enough to support me, as I will launch a Patreon campaign to support the site and focus on it full-time. As for the name, it sounded cool in my head and the initials are also a veiled reference to VD, so like the STI, I’m not going away.
